About

The Date Palms Observatory (DPO) uses advanced artificial intelligence algorithms to:

  1. Identify individual palm trees and give information about their size, age, height and type
  2. Provide spatial-temporal insights on the patterns of disease spread
  3. Analyze the health status per tree and classify the likelihood of red palm weevil (RPW) presence and infestation level
  4. Give predictions for a defined period of time
Why?

Date palms are economically, socially, culturally, and ecologically important around the Middle East and North Africa countries. Dates also pay important roles in the history, heritage and socioeconomic life of the population. Being at the 1st place of the global ranking in date exports, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has a growth policy to improve the dates production and export markets.

Given the fact that 60M date palm inspections are carried out in the KSA every year, many pest prevention centers face major issues in logistics, pest detection, response time, database management for inspection and tree counting and other problems which have massive associated costs to them.

For this purpose, we created an innovative solution that uses earth observation and remote-sensing data in order to improve the efficiency of pest and disease management in date palms and also reduce the costs of monitoring and detection of pest and disease in the dates farming industry.
